Limbus sphenoidale

The limbus sphenoidale is a term for the prominent bony ridge at the posterior edge superior surface of the body of the sphenoid bone.

Gross anatomy

It consists of a superior limbus and an inferior limbus.

The superior limbus is continuous anteriorly with the planum sphenoidale. Laterally, it is continuous with the lesser wings of the sphenoid.

The inferior limbus is continuous anteriorly with the tuberculum sellae. Laterally it is continuous with the anterior clinoid processes.

The concave, vertical ridge of bone between the superior and inferior limbus, lies medial to the optic canal, and forms the anterior border of the prechiasmatic sulcus.
